Minister for Defence meets with Amberley personnel

Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, today met with personnel at RAAF Base Amberley.

Accompanied by Senator Joanna Lindgren, Senator for Queensland, Minister Payne said it was an important visit.

“RAAF Base Amberley is a significant base, which will grow into the future with the arrival of the EA-18G Growler and the transition of the C-27J Spartan from RAAF Base Richmond.

“I also had the opportunity to view a C-17A Globemaster, which the men and women of Air Force are using to provide significant assistance to Fiji after their devastating cyclone.

HMAS Canberra returns from Fiji

HMAS Canberra returns to Australia today following its successful maiden deployment to Fiji in the wake of Tropical Cyclone Winston.

Following a request from the Fijian Government, HMAS Canberra was deployed to Fiji on 1 March to deliver much needed humanitarian aid and assistance.

Air Force proves its capability in Antarctica again

The Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) has again proven its capability to land on ice flying into Antarctica yesterday to provide assistance to the Australian Antarctic Division (AAD).

Successfully landing in colder conditions than previous flights, the C-17A Globemaster III touched down at Wilkins Aerodrome for the sixth time since November 2015.

Minister for Defence Senator the Hon Marise Payne said the C-17A had been used to return 28 expeditioners and three Squirrel Helicopters to Hobart.

Defence investing in innovative Tasmanian industry

Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, today announced the Government will invest $4 million to further develop an innovative emergency flotation device for the Australian Defence Force.

The Pegasus Aircraft Buoyancy System, developed by Australian company One Atmosphere in collaboration with Airbus Group Australia Pacific, is designed to provide additional buoyancy to rotary wing aircraft that have crashed or ditched at sea and potentially provide extra time for the aircrew to escape safely.

$7.2 million for new food processing technology in Tasmania

Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, today announced the Government will invest $7.2 million in an innovative new food processing technology which will be used to produce high-quality combat rations.

Defence will establish a Microwave Assisted Thermal Sterilisation (MATS) research and development plant within the Defence Food and Nutrition Centre in Scottsdale along with a production facility in Launceston.

Minister opens Thomas Global's new Innovation Hub

The Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, today officially opened Thomas Global System’s new Electronic and Embedded Systems Innovation Hub.

Thomas Global Systems is one of the thousands of small-to-medium enterprises around Australia that support the acquisition and sustainment of capability for the Australian Defence Force.

“The Hub has been designed to optimise innovation, fully developing the technology concepts through to integration for applications in the commercial aerospace and defence markets,” Minister Payne said.

HMAS Melbourne returns from Middle East

After five successful narcotic seizures in the Middle East and 203 days away from home, Royal Australian Navy frigate, HMAS Melbourne was welcomed back to her homeport of Sydney today.

Around one thousand family and friends joined the Minister for Defence, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, and Commander Australian Fleet, Rear Admiral Stuart Mayer, CSC and Bar, RAN, to welcome the ship’s company home from duties as part of Operation MANITOU.

Minister Payne said the 223 men and women on board have made their families and Australia proud.
