New roads funding adds to Blue Mountains infrastructure pipeline

Tuesday, 05 October 2021

The Morrison Government has delivered over $900,000 under the latest round of the successful Black Spot Program to improve safety at two crash sites in the Blue Mountains.

Blue Mountains City will receive the new federal funding for the following projects:

  • Singles Ridge Road near Purvines Road, Yellow Rock – $590,000 to install flexible barrier on roadside, vehicle-activated signs, guideposts with reflectors, shoulder improvements and curve markers and improve curved shoulder; and
  • Leura Mall from north of Railway Parade to Craigend Street, Leura – $330,000 to install a raised pedestrian crossing and street lighting at pedestrian facilities, move Stop or Give Way lines forward using kerb extensions, remove sight distance problems at Leura Mall intersection and install pedestrian fencing on kerb and street lighting.

Liberal Senator for Western Sydney, Senator the Hon Marise Payne, said the improvements would mean safer trips.

“Keeping Australians safe is the foremost priority of our government, which is why I am pleased to have secured this funding for our community,” Senator Payne said.

“We know that road safety projects like these can reduce the number of crashes causing death and injury by 30 per cent on average.”

The federal government has invested heavily in local road safety improvement projects across several programs in the Mountains. Under Roads to Recovery, which provides funding to Blue Mountains City Council to undertake small-scale upgrades and maintenance on local roads, six separate projects have recently been successfully completed.

Senator Payne said the government’s strong track record of infrastructure delivery was supporting the Blue Mountains’ economic recovery.

“In addition to boosting road safety, localised infrastructure programs, like Roads to Recovery, support a wide variety of jobs from start to finish,” Senator Payne said.

“Our local infrastructure pipeline, which encompasses everything from the ongoing delivery of new inclusive playgrounds to the redevelopment of Springwood Library, is a key part of our economic recovery plan.”
